NSF STELLAR Engine to create National Laser Innovation Hub

Designation to Ensure America Remains a Leader in Developing and Manufacturing Laser Technologies

An estimated $16 trillion global marketplace depends on lasers for everything from smartphones to national defense, but their production is increasingly based overseas.

Lasers are essential across nearly every sector, from medical devices to quantum technology. However, the US remains overly dependent on foreign-made lasers. To sustain our leadership, we must invest in developing and implementing advanced laser technologies here.

The NSF investment in the NSF STELLAR Engine to create a national laser innovation hub will bolster our workforce, from our high schools through our universities, providing career pathways from skilled trade and manufacturing to cutting-edge design. This comprehensive effort will ensure America remains at the vanguard of technology.
