A Local Focus on Deep Space
From camera lenses to space telescope mirrors, ROC’s optics legacy continues to launch innovations into orbit. 🚀
The Roman Space Telescope launched Sunday, and its optical telescope assembly, the eyes of the whole system, was designed, built, and tested right here by L3Harris. Once in orbit, Roman will collect 100 times more data per image than Hubble, gathering in three weeks what Hubble has collected in 35 years.
More than 1,000 Rochester employees worked on the project, and the technology developed for this mission is also finding its way into other areas of science, engineering and optics like high-precision computer chips and cell phone components. Innovations created here continue to be felt everywhere.
