Turning Point Tool Joins Apollo Optical Systems to Form a Vertically Integrated Optics Manufacturing Platform

Apollo Optical Systems, a leader in precision optical engineering and polymer optics manufacturing, today announced that Turning Point Tool, a Rochester-based tooling and machining company, has officially joined the Apollo platform.

This strategic combination creates a vertically integrated optics manufacturing company, where mold design, fabrication, and optical production are now performed in-house. By unifying two complementary operations under one regional umbrella, Apollo is significantly expanding its capacity to deliver high-precision, production-ready optical components with improved lead times and cost efficiency.

“This integration represents a significant milestone in Apollo’s growth strategy,” said Donald Ehinger, CEO of Apollo Optical Systems. “Bringing Turning Point Tool into our operations gives us full control of the product development and tooling lifecycle — from initial optical and part requirements through mold design and build to final optical molding. It enhances our responsiveness, reduces our customers time to market, and strengthens the value we deliver to them.”

Turning Point Tool, founded in 2006, has established itself as a trusted provider of custom plastic injection molds and CNC-machined parts across industries including optics, medical devices, aerospace, consumer products, and automotive. With a shared commitment to technical excellence and customer satisfaction, the combined teams will now offer a fully integrated process — from concept through tooling to finished optics — with all operations based in Rochester, NY.

Strategic Benefits for Customers and Partners:

  • Vertically integrated operations: Mold design, tooling, and optics manufacturing all under one roof
  • Time to market: Reduced lead-times and faster design iterations
  • Getting it right the first time: first-pass success, without redesign or tooling loops
  • Broader capabilities: Expanded tooling and non-optical machining capacity

“We are proud to join forces with Apollo,” said Frank Pezzulo, Co-Founder of Turning Point Tool. “Together, we are combining best-in-class optical and tooling expertise to build a more responsive, technically advanced manufacturing partner for the optics community.”

Operations will continue at both companies’ existing facilities in Rochester, with coordinated leadership, unified quoting and ERP systems, and a phased integration roadmap.
